My first Solo Adventure

I am attempting to write my first solo adventure for Tunnels and Trolls. The theme is Halloween, so I am watching Frighteners for some inspiration around the idea I have.

I have rediscovered a childhood addiction which was the Fighting Fantasy books - 3 are now available on the Kindle which has been very cool. The company (Worldweaver) that is doing the Kindle conversions announced on their website that they will be adapting the Lone Wolf books as well.

This site has done a great job of converting the Lone Wolf books to HTML...but the kindle will roll the dice for you, which makes things a bit easier.

So - I have plenty of experience playing solo adventures, with the world of T&T solo adventures expanding my horizons a bit.

We shall see how it goes...

House Issues 2011 - Part 4, The Home Stretch

Not much left...

Here are the results of the painting...all went smoothly and was completed in 3 days. I re-attached all the switch covers and grates for the Heating/AC.

I have a few pieces of trim to replace on the front wall and I would like to get some quarter round stained and installed to finish room.

The kichen will be getting new floor soon as well.

Now we just need to hang the curtains and get the room re-populated.

We also took the opportunity to get rid of the paneling in the kitchen that we were in the process of removing/replacing...

House Issues 2011 - Part 3, The Repairs

So - many weeks later, living out of Tracey's mom's house, driving to the house every morning to shower and get dressed for work, and stopping by after work every day to get mail and such, I finally pulled the trigger and started getting the work done.

Waiting for insurance to deny my claim and some trips that I had planned delayed the work.

The same company that did the clean-up gave me a quote for the structural repair, drywall, and replacement of the insulation. I contacted them on July 11, but they were not able to come out and get me the estimate until July 18, and then not start work until July 25.

They repaired the trusses, and put up new drywall.

They then textured the ceiling and the walls.

I hired a guy to refinish the hardwood floors. (He was great!)

I also re-contacted the company that did my repairs in 2006. They committed to coming out the week of August 8 to seal some spots in the foundation and replace some topsoil that had settled on the corner of the house. This to address the driveway side of my basement wall that is getting some moisture on the supposedly waterproofed basement.

Finally, I hired a friend of a friend to paint the ceiling and walls in the hallway, living room, and kitchen. He gave me a quote on August 9 and stared work the same day.

House Issues 2011 - Part 2, The Insurance Fiasco

So - a company came out and did the initial clean-up with the anticipation that my losses would be covered by insurance.

The couch, loveseat, and lamps were thrown out. The company cleaned up and boxed the rest of the contents and put some plastic to cover the huge hole in the ceiling.

Good thing too, because with no insulation and the 100 degree days of July, the thermostat only reached about 98 degrees in the upstairs...

Check your policy and ask your agent to raise your deductible to at least $1000, because unless there is a smoking gun, nothing is covered by your homeowners policy. I was praying for a tree to fall on my house during the storms that followed in June and July...at least that would be covered...but I am sure my insurance company would only repair the house to the point of not replacing the ceiling and the insulation.

When I drove by a house with a tree on it - I thought "Lucky Bastards - they are covered!".

So anyway, nothing is covered by my homeowner's insurance, Flood insurance refused to re-open my 2006 claim since my adjuster never checked for structural damage in the ceiling, and the company that did the work in 2006 showed up, spent 5 minutes at the house, and said - "Nope, not our problem."

So - I either hire a structural engineer (which is a racket in and of itself) and a lawyer to go after the company to see if they damaged the structure when they propped up the house for the repairs, or I just pay for the repairs myself. Since the legal route was not guaranteed to bear any fruit, I decided to just move forward with the repairs - eventually.

House Issues 2011 - Part 1, Happy Birthday

So...this house has been the bane to my existence...after the flood of 2005, I figured everything would be cool...until May 30, 2011 - my birthday. I was in the basement enjoying a video game I received from brother John for my birthday (LA Noire) and then I heard a rather large boom-boom...

My first reaction was to yell at the dogs for knocking something over...but the volume of the crashes from upstairs was just too much, as was the drifting smell of dust that had already began to creep down the stairs.

I was befuddled at the state of my living room. Mojo was next to me at the stairway but Ash was nowhere to be found and not answering my call - I found him quivering on Liam's bed.

I noticed Mojo had a gash on her chest so I took the dogs to the emergency vet. Luckily, only a minor injury that could have been alot worse since both dogs were more than likely sleeping in the living room at the time of the collapse.
